BSA HISTORY
Lord Baden Powell Over 80 years ago on a island off the British coast, Brownsea Island, Lord Baden Powell started the movement of SCOUTING. He found that in his military career during the colonization of Africa that the young men in his charge were not prepared for the task before them. The skills of cooking, first aid, swimming, survival, knots were all essential in order to survive this sometime hostile environment. After his military duties were completed, he set forth to create a program which would prepare young men for an unknown world. Lord Baden Powell’s goal was simple. "Scouting is a GAME with a PURPOSE. VALUES are the PURPOSE and LEARNING is the process." The movement was brought to America in 1910 and quickly caught on as an essential part of building one’s character and in providing service to the community. In 1912 congress approved the creation of THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA. |
